“Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.”
I'm really happy that self-love and wellness in general are being talked about and celebrated more and more, but I'm not sure if I've seen a lot about what it all actually means. Self-care, Earth- care and Self-love are central to what Earth & Alkemy is all about so here's how I think about it.
What's Self-care? I consider Self-care to be doing my best to take care of my health, in all forms. One way to do this is to keep our minds balanced and free of lingering negativity by meditating (read about how I do it here). Another important way I practice Self-care is by controlling what goes into and on my body. That means being mindful of what I eat, what I drink, and what personal hygiene products I use. Practicing self-care is also connected to the Earth and how we care for her.
If I drive my car unnecessarily that puts out extra emissions making the quality of air that I breathe, that my family and friends breathe worse. If I buy a face wash or shower gel with micro beads inside (those tiny colorful plastic balls), they get washed away and eventually wind up in the ocean. Then the toxic micro-beads find their way into fishes stomachs which we eat; my family, my friends and myself.
These are just two quick examples of the cause and effect connection between Self-care and Earth-care. Everything is a part of some cycle and all living things are connected in someway or another. Just as throwing trash out of your car window can loop back to affect the health of you and your family, Self-love is affected by the quality of Self-care we pour into ourselves and Earth-care we give to nature.
